After our late lunch on Saturday Brad and I did not feel like staying at home. So, we grabbed the camera and headed out on a drive through parts of Dallas we are unfamiliar with, mainly the industrial area in the flood plain and south Dallas.
In the design district (which is completely desolate on the weekends which made this find quite creepy-odd) we found a fenced yard of bronze statues, kinda like a twisted Tim Burton-esque menagerie.

I wonder who commissioned this piece?

An old motel in south Dallas. I think there were still people staying here, Brad said he saw a working vending machine near the office. Needless to say, I jumped out of the car, snapped this shot, and quickly got back in the car. It was not a good area and nothing says "Mug Me" like a white boy holding an expensive camera.

I liked the way this building looked.

Heading back to our stomping grounds.

It was an illuminating drive. I don't think we'll be revisiting any of the places we went to. More than anything it just compounded what I've already known about Dallas, which is that there are some nice and even interesting places to go to and live in (we like our gayborhood) but overall it's a shithole.

The statues in the fence reminds me of the old English production of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." All thats needed is the really bad graphics of the creatures springing to life.

My Dallas friends used to live in Kessler Park and I really liked that neighborhood (they are somewhere just northwest of downtown now, near where all the streets have Disney names - it's OK).
My initial reaction to Dallas years ago was "ugh!" but I have come to appreciate it through many visits. Still glad I live in Houston though.

Amazing pictures of the statues behind the fence and especially the ice skating people on the third photo. You create an eerie and creepy atmosphere although there is bright sun and the sky´s steel blue. Excellent!

I'd stay at the Alamo Plaza in a minute. Just my kind of place. We've stayed in a place just like that in Hermiston, Oregon. The lady had a fake $3.00 bill with a picture of Bill Clinton in the middle of it. I knew we were in trouble.

Don't sell Oak Cliff and the Design District out as scary! It's just unfamiliar territory the first few times. Just up the road from that Alamo motel is the (completely redone, hip) Belmont. Their patio has a great view of downtown, with yummy things to wet your whistle...hope you didn't turn around so fast that you missed it!
